NBC remembers Tim Russert

June 14th, 2008

Tim Russert, Meet the Press

Today, the world lost a brilliant, gifted man. Tim Russert, political journalist and commentator, devoted husband and father, and lifelong sports enthusiast, died today from an apparent heart attack. Russert was only 58 years old, yet his personal and professional legacy will last for generations.

For years I have enjoyed the observations and social commentary of Russert’s colleague and friend, Tom Brokaw, one of America’s most distinguished contemporary journalists.  But it was Tim Russert who engaged my attention and stimulated my appetite for political news and commentary. Russert’s depth and breadth of knowledge and extraordinary interview skills on Meet the Press were as instructional as they were informative to this frequent viewer.

Catching Tim Russert on MSNBC helped renew my interest and respect for NBC news by exposing me to its many extraordinary anchors and commentators. Because of Tim Russert I have become a fan of the whole gang at MSNBC: Chris Matthews, Keith Olberman, Andrea Mitchell, David Gregory, Dan Abrams, Chuck ToddJoe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Willie Geist, and all the many fiercely bright and articulate guests that regularly appear and contribute to the daily dialogue on current events.

Tonight I thank the many dedicated professionals at NBC news who knew, loved, and respected Tim Russert. I thank them for their strength as they face the cameras and eloquently share their impressions of the man who helped so many people understand and appreciate American politics and democracy.

God bless your family, Tim Russert, as they mourn your passing and grieve for their loss. I humbly thank your wife and son for the time they shared you with the world.

God bless you, Tim Russert, as you begin your new journey through the life ahead. I look forward (though not hastily) to the interviews you’re sure to hold on the other side. One can only imagine the lineup of notable guests you’ll pursue…!
